Lawrence Dorr from South San Francisco Calif. wrote in a letter this to Time Magazine (and it has been published in the Dec 4th issue along with a series of other letters on both sides of the issue, which were in response to the God vs. Science story in the November 13 issue):

What Intelligent Designer came up with caner and toothaches? Who “designed” your appendix and tonsils, organs that do nothing but get infected and cause you grief? How intelligent is the famously fragile human spine, or the narrow pelvis that makes childbirth harder for humans than for almost any other species? There are evolutionary explanations for all of these, but I hardly think there was much intelligence in designing halitosis, acne and flatulence.

I wish this guy would figure out which side he is arguing, because it seems he is almost arguing more for the Intelligent Design side; especially by bringing up that the human pelvis is so narrow as to make childbirth harder for humans than any other species. Lets see Genesis 3:16

To the woman He said, “I will greatly multiply Your pain in childbirth, In pain you will bring forth children; Yet your desire will be for your husband, And he will rule over you.” NASB

that is only the third chapter of the whole Bible. This guy is trying to argue against God without even reading three chapters of God’s book. Is it so much to expect that it you are going to reject the concept of a designer you at least knows a little bit about the history the Designer has reveled? As for his other points isn’t evolution suppose to enable us to adapt, so why hasn’t natural selection done away with the appendix, and tonsils and all these other problems that he mentions. Unless maybe God created us, and now, because of sin we have the 2nd law of thermodynamics:

Physicist Lord Kelvin stated it technically as follows: “There is no natural process the only result of which is to cool a heat reservoir and do external work.” In more understandable terms, this law observes the fact that the useable energy in the universe is becoming less and less. Ultimately there would be no available energy left. Stemming from this fact we find that the most probable state for any natural system is one of disorder. All natural systems degenerate when left to themselves.

The other day Tim and I were on route 1 north in southern Rhode Island, and witnessed road rage in action. While I was driving these cars all started bunching up and cutting in front of me. Every time a left even a couple of car lengths of distance someone would cut in front of me. Then I mentioned that there was and accident waiting to happen, then it started escalating and Tim starting taking pictures. Apparently, after some number of people had cut in front of me this guy in a white pickup truck got mad probably at the guy in the red pickup for not letting him back in or just wanted to get in front of the traffic, and decided to pass by going off the road. He did make sure to pass on the left, but through maybe that he could make it in front of the other cars before he had gotten out of the left hand turn lane.

This is yet more proof of how messed up our road system is in the US; this particular road has many turnarounds on the left hand side so the left stays clogged with either people that will need to turn or people turning around and attempting to merge into 60 mph traffic (speed limit is 50, but traffic often moves much faster) with no almost no merge lane. This alone makes for deadly scenario and is the reason why they closed a number of them off up farther North on the road. However, this represents a small portion of a larger problem with are driving system we have too many left hand exits in this country so people must be in the left lane, often, which slows down traffic. In many parts of Europe they mange traffic more efficiently and require people to keep right and do not even have speed limits. I do not understand why we have speed limits and then allow everyone to exceed the speed limit, unless they are exceeding the speed limit by too much, and then they are in trouble. If not one is able to travel the speed limit including the police why do we not change speed limits to something that is more reasonable so that way when someone actually wants to follow the law they are able to without getting run off the road. I guess the speed limits can show us our imperfection, in that no one can follow the speed limit all the time, so we if we are incapable of even following the speed limit then we are very incapable of achieving perfecting in other areas of our life.

311-rule

With many people traveling these holidays I thought I should help get the word out about the 3-1-1 rule. The 3-1-1 stands for 3oz limit on size of liquids, gels or aerosols, in a 1 quart for every 1 person. If everyone remembers this rule it should help those of you that may be traveling move through the airport faster. In addition you may put liquids in your checked baggage so there really should not be a large problem with needing to carry a lot of liquids on board. As many of us remember TSA enacted the rule shortly after they thwarted an alleged plot out of London using liquid explosives in August. Back in August people had to pour out expensive Maple Syrup from Vermont, expensive wine from San Francisco, and hot sauce from Mexico. Keep in mine that does not just apply to cosmetics, but also to these types of things. So don’t end having to pour out expensive jams or even a snow globe (that is right according to the TSA site even snow globes will have to be less than 3 oz, even if they are in sealed package!). However, these items are alright if they are purchased after the security check point.

Did your dad ever say lets talk and then gave you some money. I don’t think so. Recently the Boston Red Sox paid the Siebo Lions $51 million dollars for the right to talk to their star pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka. I think it is universally agreed upon that is the most mony anyone has ever been paid for the right of a desparate party to talk to them. However this large expendature seems wrong in so many ways. Firstly, the Boston Red Sox deemed $45 million too much for their former ace, and one of the best pitchers in baseball hitory, Pedro Martinez. They also refused to pay Johnny Damon more than he’s worth. In fact, throughout the history of baseball the Red Sox have not been willing to go the distance for their team. Yet all of a sudden, Epstein has bottomless pockets and we will be paying $50 million for a back up player. Pocket change to the new Red Sox, considereng $50 million covers about three Fenway Franks and two beers. However if the Red Sox are now willing to pay old, broken players like J.D. Drew more money than Johnny Damon, and more money to talk to an unprven young gun than a proven hall of famer, like Pedro Martinez, maybe people will continue to pay these outrageous prices to relive the dream of 2004. But if the Red Sox finish in 3rd place again this year, I guarantee you the ante will only be upped by Epstein and the owners.

On a new side story, the New York Yankess, have paid the Hanshin Tigers $25 million to talk to their star pitcher Kei Igawa This is noteworthy, because it is half of what the Red Sox paid, and chances are he will double the nubers of Daisuke Matsuzaka because with Boston and New York, that is the status quo.

Saddam on trial

25 hours ago at approximately 4:00 am Eastern time Saddam Hussein received his sentence; death by hanging. Saddam who had said before he preferred firing squad ( because that is the method of execution for military officials while hanging is for common criminals) was defiant as usual. At first Saddam refused to stand so the judge ordered him to be stood up then upon receiving his sentence immediately began speaking over his sentence saying you do not decide, Long live the people, down with the traitors, calling the judge a tool of the occupation, and saying things like god curse the occupiers while raising the Quran in his left hand. Two other death sentences were also handed out; one to Saddam’s half brother, whom got the privilege of going last after Saddam, and one other death sentence was given to another of Saddam’s officials. In addition, the vice president got life, and three other baath party officials got 15 years and one was acquitted. Saddam’s sentence (and the other two life sentences) will automatically go to appeal by a panel of 9 judges; the appeal has no time limit and once all appeals have been exhausted the sentence must be carried out within 30 days. It is expected he will probably be executed some time in the spring of 2007
